How much fabric do you really need to miter the corner on your quilt?

It seems the "rule of thumb" for mitered corners is a measurement of 2" plus width of border plus length of quilt plus width of border plus 2" plus 1/2". Could you explain the logic to having the entire width of border measurement included? For instance if your border is 6 1/2" wide, it seems like there is a lot of waste when needing to trim the access.

While that might seem like a lot of extra fabric, remember that you are sewing a 45 degree angle, and it takes a surprising amount of fabric.  I can't even tell you how many times I have ended up short when I am mitering the corners on my borders.
