Ask Penny Halgren

How do you stuff your binding?

I'll admit I have not ever done this, but it's something I will do.

I understand that this technique is popular with quilt show judges, so if you are entering a show, it might be something to consider.

To stuff your binding, you trim the batting an extra 1/2 inch beyond the quilt top and backing. It would be like having the lettuce sticking out of your sandwich.

The apply your binding, matching the raw edges of the binding to the raw edges of your quilt top and back - with the batting sticking out beyond the binding.

Then wrap the binding around to the backside (or front) of the quilt, encasing the extra batting inside the binding.

This will give your binding an extra three-dimensional look.

Happy Quilting!
