Ask Penny Halgren

Natural battings like cotton and wool have been on the market for years. What makes bamboo batting so special?

The antibacterial property is pretty special if you’re doing baby quilting. The bamboo batting we offer is a blend of 50% bamboo and 50% organic cotton. It combines that nice antibacterial property and the silky softness of bamboo. It also offers the characteristics quilters desire in the natural cotton. It will lie flat and drape nicely.

It produces less lint than cotton does. If you quilt with cotton, your bobbin gets all full of lint. You have to keep cleaning it out. The bamboo has a longer fiber. There are fewer ends that break off during the sewing process and form lint that can clog your bobbin. That’s a nice side effect we hadn’t anticipated. It’s a very positive characteristic.

Bamboo batting has a surprising loft. When you think of cotton, you think of it as being thin and flat. When you quilt with it, you don’t get a lot of relief. Bamboo has a little more loft for more definition, the same definition you might get through thread painting or heavy quilting. You get that relief you might want in the artistry of your quilt.

Those are the things we think set bamboo apart from some of the other things on the market today.

Happy Quilting!

I bought some Bamboo socks last Christmas and they had holes in them in 2 wears. several pairs. I got the impression Bamboo was NOT a very strong fibre ,therefore I would be hesitant to use it. Comments comments.
