Ask Penny Halgren

Before you start a project, do you do sample pieces to test everything out?

This question was posed to Annie Smith as she discussed machine applique. Here is her answer:

I always do. I take a little four-by-six piece of fabric. I fold it in the center to make a little pleat. I just run a stitch to make sure my blanket stitch is stitching exactly the way I want it to, width-wise and length-wise. I make sure I don’t have any skipped stitches or anything like that.

The reason I put a little pleat in it is it will allow me to take the straight stitches in the lower part of the fabric and it will allow me to put my zigzags into the pleat. That is the higher part of the fabric.

Happy Quilting!
