Ask Penny Halgren

I'm thinking about making a quilt with my children and grand-children's photos. What kind of fabric should I use?

I would use cotton fabric to transfer the photos. Here is a video showing the
process:

In this case, I used flannel. The pictures faded fairly quickly, although I'm
not sure whether it was the flannel or because it was washed a lot in hot water.
The quilt was for my dad who was in a nursing home.

You will definitely want to use pre-treated fabric - either with Bubble Jet or
fabric that is already pre-treated, available online or in shops.

Size is a matter of choice. I've seen quilts with pictures as large as 8" by
10," mine were about 3" square.

I think it's fun to have quilts with photos on them. In general I don't know how
long the photos stay on them. I will have a couple who has a unique process for
transferring during my July Eavesdrop on a Telephone Conversation:

You might take a look at their process.

Thanks again and Happy Quilting!
