Ask Penny Halgren

I want to tie a quilt -- but do not know what the distance should be between the ties

Generally quilts are tied between 4 and 6 inches apart. You want to be sure to secure the batting (or flannel) between the layers. If your ties are too far apart, the batting may shift around.

Some quilters place their ties in the center of each block, other quilters place their ties in the corners of the blocks.

That is simply a design choice, and may help you decide how far apart you will make your ties.

Hope that helps.

Happy Quilting!
