Learn How to Hand Quilt

hand quilting

Are you confused about how to place your quilt in a hoop for hand quilting? Have you read the tips for how to "rock" your needle, but it just doesn't make sense?

In this DVD, you will learn:

  • how to place your quilt in a hoop (I did this wrong for years!)
  • how to hold your needle
  • how to guide your needle through the quilt layers
  • your choices of quilting needles
  • your choices of quilting hoops

And, you can watch as many times as you want to, conveniently on your TV or computer.

Q: I have a hand appliqued quilt that is on a black background. I started to hand quilt it but I'm not happy with the look. It is also very difficult to quilt through the layers. I used a black scrim batting. Can I take out the stitches and possibly use another thinner easier to hand quilt batting? Do you recommend that I continue on with what I have? I've put a lot of time in the applique and I don't want to damage the quilt now. I also would hate to just stuff the quilt away as a UFO. Can you help me?

A: I would pull the stitches out. Any batting with a scrim will be extremely difficult to quilt through. My favorite batting for hand quilting is Hobbs Heirloom. It is cotton with a little polyester so it won't come apart. It does not have a scrim and it is not needle punched. Either of those will make it harder to hand quilt.

My theory is the little (even though it seems like a lot) time you spend now will be worth all of the years you will look at the quilt. I have pulled out quilting stitches on two quilts now and they re-quilt fine. The only problem I had was with the backing fitting again, but these were quilts that were entirely finished, shrunk beyond belief, and then I un-quilted them and started over with layering the tops.

Happy Quilting!
