Ask Penny Halgren

I got my quilt all sewed together and discovered that I had ironed it like I would a blouse or dress. Do I have to rip it out again before I put the back on it?

Do you mean that you ironed it with the seam allowances open instead of pressed to one side?

If so, rest assured that there are many quilters who prefer to iron their seam allowances that way, and there is no need to rip it apart and start over!

The two schools of thought are:

- with the seam allowances pressed open, the quilt is easier to quilt because there is less bulk.

- with the seam allowances pressed to one side, the "stress" of the pull of the fabric is carried by the fabric and not so much by the thread.

With the seam allowances pressed open, you may want to be sure to do some quilting across the seam allowances and close to them, so they are secured to the other layers of your quilt. That way, the stress of the movement will not be so focused on the thread in the seams.

Hope that helps!

Happy Quilting!
