Q: My mother and her sisters have quilted since they were young girls (they needed quilts for warmth). They are now in their 70's and 80's and now they gather for the fellowship and fun to do their quilting.
I am a beginner but I really enjoy the little bit I have done. I hand quilt and I am verrry slow but new at this. Their stitches are so very fine and I can't seem to master that; is there a rule or principle concerning the lenghth of stitches for a pretty quilt? Thanks for your response. Lee York in Florence, SC
A: What a great tradition! There is much disagreement about the size of stitches. And, actually there is now a movement toward "big" stitches, where you use dark, thick thread (maybe perle cotton or embroidery thread) and the stitches are about 1/4 inch long. I think what everyone agrees on is that the consistency in the length of stitches is more important than the actual length.
Happy Quilting!
